Crocodile Character
Original concept by: Dile/Benji

This concept, created by Dile/ Benji, was a great way for me to work on exaggerated shape language.
Inspired by Kung Fu Panda, The Bad Guys', and Zootopia's distinctive art direction, I chose a crocodile character to capture both DreamWorks’ and Disney's stylized aesthetic. This project allowed me to push forms while also attempting to better the concept in its 3d form.

Before starting this project, I found a multitude of people who also created stylized crocodiles. This allowed me to dissect how/ what other artists did to create their characters.

I used ZBrush's ZSphere to block out the character’s proportions, then sculpt finer details. I made sure to focus mostly on the exaggerated shape language while maintaining anatomical believability.
I then retopologized the mesh in Maya to create clean topology.

Most of the texturing was done in Substance Painter, where I developed materials to emulate the stylization from the concept.
I also used Substance Sampler, for the first time, along with Photoshop to create the jacket patches.

For the Crocodile's clothing, I continued to emulate the concept while also creating a bit of realism.

I looked at different versions of letterman jackets to make sure I was able to execute that particular style.
Clothing was created by masking and extracting in ZBrush.
